Ancient Greek theater began in 6th century BCE in Athens. The first plays performed were inspired by tragedy and later comedy as well. Art and visual creations played a huge role in the theatrical masterpieces from this time. Extravagant costumes, sets, and masks were created to enhance these performances. The physical art that has survived from these ancient times says so much about Ancient Greek theater. It gives us an understanding of history and culture through colorful, expressive works of art. Theater was a way for people of Ancient Greece to express their culture and who they were as people. Their performances reflected the world and society they lived in. Theater was also greatly inspired by their Gods. Not only were the art and performances extravagent, but the theaters in which they were held were immense and beautiful. Theater was taken very seriously in Ancient Greece and we continue to learn about their culture through different forms of art that still exist today from so long ago.
